CER Capacity-Building Among Chinese-Speaking Vascular Patient Populations

In partnership with USC, Casa Colina, and community non-profits serving Chinese speaking populations in San Francisco and Los Angeles, we are working with Chinese-speaking patients & caregivers living with vascular disease to build capacity to engage in clinical comparative effectiveness research (CER).

Project Description

Project Name: PCOR/CER Capacity-Building Among Chinese-Speaking Vascular Patient Populations

Project Length: Jan 2024 - Mar 2026

The Foundation to Advance Vascular Cures is working on a 2-year project to identify and address barriers to engaging in research among Chinese-speaking patients living with vascular disease. This project is primarily focused in California. This project involves bringing education to Chinese-speaking vascular patient populations, to raise awareness of the role of research in identifying and improving treatments. We seek to understand the specific needs and priorities of this unique population to create tailored resources and tools to help them comfortably participate in research projects.

The main activities in this project are virtual meetings to learn about vascular disease, comparative clinical effectiveness research, and how to engage in different research projects as patient advisors and leaders. There will also be opportunities to help develop materials, disseminate them within communities, and provide feedback on a variety of tools and resources that we will be developing as part of this project. The Foundation to Advance Vascular Cures provides honoraria (monetary payment) to all patient and caregiver partners who engage meaningfully in our work. We will provide free translation wherever it is needed (both virtually and in-person). No knowledge of English is required.

What's the Need

Vascular disorders, encompassing conditions like peripheral artery disease, aneurysms, and venous disease, pose escalating risks due to an aging population and increased chronic conditions. Despite their serious impact, vascular disorders are understudied and relatively unknown. Addressing health inequities in literacy, access, research, and care is a priority. Patient engagement in research, through activities like advising research teams and interpreting results, has been shown to greatly improve the applicability of research findings to the lives of those patients. Chinese-speaking patients living with vascular disease are underrepresented in research, and need to have a greater say in the vascular research that could yield life-saving treatments and cures. This presents a need to better understand the barriers and facilitators to engaging in research that are specific to this population.

How We Partner

The Foundation to Advance Vascular Cures is partnering with California organizations that serve Chinese-speaking vascular patients to recruit and support the education and engagement of these populations in research. We will provide educational materials, recruitment and onboarding support, and are responsive to the communities we partner with. We value flexible, authentic partnerships that advance the needs of all partners and the communities they serve. Connect with us to learn more about how we can partner with you.

This project is funded through a Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Award (EACB-32761). The views presented in this project are solely the responsibility of the Foundation to Advance Vascular Cures and do not necessarily represent the views of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute® (PCORI®), its Board of Governors or Methodology Committee.
